It started just after 5 o'clock yesterday evening on Hill Road in an area southwest of Taft. Initially, Kern County Fire reported 50 acres had burned. But, the latest update from Cal Fire is 850 acres with only 5-percent containment. Multiple fire crews have been fighting the flames on the ground and from the air. No word on whether any homes are threatened or when full containment is expected.As wildfires rip through Kern County, a rash of *structure* fires is adding to the burden being borne by firefighters in Bakersfield. This used to be Great American Antiques on 19th Street.It sits right across the street from the Bakersfield Museum of Art.The old antique store closed in November.This 3-alarm fire broke out around 11:30 last night and quickly consumed the 37-thousand square foot building.Fire crews have remained on scene throughout the night trying to clean up.It's unclear what caused the fire to break out or if there were any injuries.Also breaking overnight out of Oildale...A man is in the hospital this morning after being hit by a truck. This fire is being called the "Shadow Fire" and is located on Shadow Mountain Drive near Denise Drive. Officials say it is spreading at a moderate speed. An evacuation warning is in effect for the Squirrel Mountain Valley area. We will continue to follow this breaking news and bring you any updates as they become availablefire crews were busy putting out a blaze in northwest Bakersfield. This fire happened at this home on Klemer street around 11 pm. The home is near the Talladega neighborhood off Renfro road and Rosedale Highway. According to police, the shooting happened around 12:30 yesterday afternoon at the McDonald's on California City Boulevard. The victim was shot and taken to Antelope Valley Hospital where that person died. No arrests have been made. The ages of those involved and the circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been released. 28/05/2024 Duración: 21minSome of today's top storiesPolice are asking for your help catching accused members of an organized crime ring that stole tens of thousands dollars in sunglasses... and sold them out of a smoke shop. This all happened at the Sunglass Hut at Valley Plaza Mall earlier this month. BPD says three people walked into the store and stole about 50 pairs of designer sunglasses. Then they returned and stole another 50 pairs a few days later... this time pepper spraying staff who tried to stop them. Investigators later learned the crime ring was selling the sunglasses out of a smoke shop on Beale Avenue. Officers say they found 21 pairs of sunglasses, drugs and guns. Officers arrested five people in connection with the thefts. However, they're still looking for three others... It happened last night just after 11 p.m. just south of Main Drain Road. C-H-P says the car fire quickly spread to nearby brush. It is unclear what led up to the crash. The person killed has not been publicly identifiedFire crews are trying to contain the flames of a wildfire in Buttonwillow called the Twisselman Fire. The Twisselman Wildfire has consumed more than 300 acres in an area Northeast of I-5 on Twisselman and Lost Hills Roads. The fire was reported shortly after 5pm yesterday evening. At last report, forward progression of the fire has been contained. There are currently no reports of any structures threatened or any pre evacuations ordered. This all began around 4 p.m. at Fast Stop Market on Niles and Virginia Streets. KCSO says the man fled from a stolen vehicle into the convenience store, where he barricaded himself and refused to come out. Deputies eventually went inside and took the man into custody. They say a firearm was recovered at the scene. The Kern County Sheriff's Senior Deputy who died Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound has been identified. 36-year-old Benjamin Harmonson was found outside his unmarked patrol vehicle a little before 3 p-m, near a canal north of 7th Standard Road and west of Verdugo Lane. The discovery prompted a huge law enforcement response, with more than 30 patrol cars and motorcycles from various agencies gathering at the scene, and eventually forming a single file procession to the coroner's office. A body found inside a patrol car in northwest Bakersfield is that of a Kern County Sheriff's deputy. 17's Robert Price has the story.A Kern County jury convicted a man of causing a crash while high on drugs, leaving three people dead. Jose De Jesus Velazquez-Gomez t-boned a car carrying three women headed to their farmworker jobs in Lamont. The crash happened November 3 at the intersection of South Edison and Di Giorgio Roads. Prosecutors said Velazquez-Gomez was impaired by methamphetamine at the time of the crash.

You can see the massive police presence -- with dozens of officers on scene. Bakersfield police say the department was asked to assist KCSO with a death investigation. It's about an officer-involved shooting in an area near Brimhall Road and Calloway Drive. According to the Sheriff's Office, a welfare check turned into an exchange of gunfire with the suspect. As fires rage on across Kern County... including one northeast of Bakersfield. The so-called "Cow fire" started just after 11:30 yesterday morning along Highway 178 and Kern River Canyon Road. It happened in a neighborhood down the street from Liberty High School. Last night it all started as a welfare check for a man reported to be suffering with a mental health crisis and possibly having a gun. Over the course of several hours last night, deputies say they arrived at the scene and tried several ways to de-escalate the situation. K-C-S-O says the subject allegedly fired on deputies, hence the officer-involved-shooting. No Sheriff's Office personnel were injured, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. This is an ongoing investigation and K-C-S-O is asking to to contact the Sheriff's Office if you have any information. His whereabouts since that night have remained unknown. But Scrivner's attorney H-A Sala released a statement, saying his Scrivner is on "a medical leave of absence."The statement went on to say Kern's interim Chief Administrative Officer was notified of the leave on Monday. It does not say how long the leave will last. It comes after Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting in which Scrivner was noticably absent.
