The women trudging to the tomb of Jesus on that Sunday morning didn't expect an angel - but he was expecting them! There is comfort in suffering. When we deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Jesus, surprising things happen. What does it mean to take up our cross and follow Jesus? Yesterday we got a glimpse of Simon of Cyrene, the foreigner who was honored to carry the cross of Christ up that hill. The divine plan must have looked totally random to Simon of Cyrene! Everything about that last day of Jesus' life was "by the Book" - I mean, according to what was written in the Scriptures. And people created in the image of God were making free choices. Somehow these cosmic forces intersected on a busy street right in front of a dark-skinned foreigner named Simon.
