Cornelius was devout... but he was not saved. It must have taken courage for the Roman Centurion to abandon the numerous gods of his nation. He became devoted to the one true God. If anyone could have claimed righteousness by his own merits, it was Cornelius. But he needed to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus, like everyone else. Preaching to Gentiles - is that even kosher?! The kosher dietary laws became a symbol for something much more important, in Acts 10. Death will change your life! Maybe Paul wasn't actually dead when he got his glimpse of the next world: "in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows," he wrote. But some kind of switch was flipped for Paul, and Peter, and Stephen, in the worst crises of their lives. If you go to Hell, it will be over Jesus' dead body. I hope my opening didn't sound irreverent. What I mean is that Jesus died to keep you out of Hell. It takes serious determination to refuse God's grace for a lifetime. But many people are just that determined, and today we'll see them at the Great White Throne. What do we mean when we talk about "the last judgment?" We saw in our previous excursion into the book of Revelation that we can get a bit sloppy about what we call "Heaven." What happens before the Last Days? Any study of Revelation takes us forward into the future, all the way out to the end of Gentile history. And that calls for a study of the book of Daniel, and of Jesus' words on the subject.
