How do we handle change? From the everyday changes that arise from the different seasons of our lives like getting marries, having kids, the teen years, empty nest, grandparents, retirement to change that might be forced upon us like a bad health report or losing a job or death of a loved one. All of us struggle with change - we find comfort in the routine and that comfort grows stronger the older we get so when change comes it can leave us unbalanced. As the writer of Hebrews closes out his letter, he offers up some closing thoughts with very practical application and expectations for those who call themselves Christians. While they may seem like "common sense" for some, as we find ourselves living in a culture where discernment, critical thinking and even common sense itself have become more of the exception than the rule - even in the American church - these principles are all the more vital for us to apply and live out in our everyday lives. You hear people say it all the time when asked about their life and what they hope for when they might face God. It sounds something like, "I think I have lived a good life" or "I hope I have done enough" with the idea being that how we live in this life will determine whether we go to heaven. While the writer of Hebrews addresses that issue using theological truths all throughout the letter, here at the end of Hebrews 12 he bluntly and starkly confronts this false mentality. Using the metaphor of Mount Sinai and Mount Zion to represent legalism/the law verses grace alone, he clearly and boldly states that the means by which we choose to approach God (either through your own good works, or through grace and faith in Jesus Christ) is the same means by which God will judge you. This is a very relevant truth for the American church where a recent survey revealed that 35% of "pastors" do not believe that Jesus is the only path to salvation and that people can "go to heaven"

As we continue to build on our study of Hebrews Chapter 12, We discover that there are certain areas that our "Spiritual Race" (Christian Life) should always use as guidepost and other areas that we must avoid at all costs. After the author gives the analogy comparing the life of a Christian to a marathon race that each individual must run, he encourages us how we might run it as smoothly and successfully as possible (vs 1-3). He then reminds us that it we find ourselves slowing down, detoured or quitting that God loves us enough to use difficult circumstances and situations in our lives to get us back on track (Spiritual discipline, vs 4-11). In this message, he is going to lay down some guides (not running alone, pursue peace, let Holiness be your guide) to help us navigate the race we are called to run, but also offer some warnings of a few things (bitterness, sexual immorality and Worldliness) we might encounter along the race that we need to avoid.  From Hebrews 12:12-17.Thank you for listening

Many Christians are confused by the concept or thought that God disciplines "his children" or those who follow Jesus Christ. We ask, "Why and How would he do that?" This message looks at God's discipline in the context of Hebrews 12:1-3 from the previous message (#41 A Race Worth Running) and why it is very important for Christians to not only recognize and accept God's discipline in their lives but to even learn count it and claim it as a promise of God's love for us. It is easy to read Hebrews 11, the chapter described as the "Heroes of the Faith" as a lesson in how faith in God triumphs over everything but is that the whole story? The writer of Hebrews ends the chapter with a litany of very disturbing events that happened to those who placed their faith in God - tortured, flogged, stoned, even cut in half? This is not the sort of "feel good story" that many modern Christians seem to be looking for on Sundays, but it is a vital truth that we need to hear.  Nowhere does the Bible promise that living the life of a Christ follower would be easy - matter of fact, it promises just the opposite. This message examines the promises of God that every Christian can claim in the midst of storms and difficulties and for when it seems like your story can't possibly have a "happy ending". In this message we examine the life of Moses as mentioned in Hebrews 11. It goes without saying that if you were to put together a list of heroes of the faith from the Old Testament, Moses would surely be at the top of that list. He is considered by many to be the greatest man in the Old Testament, he received the 10 Commandments from God and established the law, he renewed the Covenant between God and the Israelites, he established the sacrificial worship system and oh yeah. he confronted the greatest empire of its day to rescue, set free the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt. But these are not the examples of faith that we find in Hebrews 11, instead we have several glimpses from Moses's earlier life that set him on the path to becoming the Hero of Faith we know today. Why would the writer choose these examples and what are their significance? How do these examples help us answer some of life's most challenging questions for our own lives like; "Who am I?" In this message we look at the struggles of faith that Abraham had on his way to becoming a "Hero of the Faith" listed in the roll call of faith in Hebrews 11. While most of us know about Abraham's great steps of faith like leaving his home in Ur to be obedient to follow God's call to the "promise land" or his willingness to sacrifice his "miracle" son on the Altar; but what is not so well known is all of the faith failures that he experienced along the way. It is by examining these failures that we can identify some of the same struggles that many of us have when it comes to being obedient to God and stepping out by faith in our own everyday lives.  We look at things like fear, worry, impatience and selfishness and both how they can hinder our faith and what we can do to overcome them. In this message we examine some common misconceptions about what faith is and how Christian's communicate about their faith.
