Continuing to college, where she helped create a program for disabled youth & kept 3 jobs while staying on the Dean's List Styles' college years were marked by exceptional commitment and accomplishments. 1994, she received her Bachelor of Science in therapeutic recreation from Western Carolina University. She completed a 12-week internship at a Montana wilderness camp and then part-time work at Asheville Mall. Styles' passion for wilderness programming led her to a job at a South Carolina state-run wilderness camp. Taking a role in the program's development. Twenty-two-year-old Karen Styles had a 2 p.m. shift at the mall on October 31, 1994. Before her shift, she planned to run. That Halloween morning, Styles disappeared into the National Forest. When she did not return home, A search was initiated. She would not be located alive.

The fall of 1963 may be a good example. "History repeats itself." This quote is attributed to both Marx and Churchill. Both are correct to a point. Marx stated that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, the second time as farce. Church Hill pointed out that if we don't learn from history, we will repeat it." Both men were correct to a point. An incident in the fall of 1963 in Madison County, NC, showed this may be true.

Replay of 2021 Shade of Blue Story to honor Chief Boone

Originally aired on January 9th. 2021, we are replaying it because of one of the stories in that particular podcast. A story of a shooting in 1994 at the Yancey County Courthouse involving a magistrate and several first responders. One of those individuals involved was Mike Boone. Mike survived the night and later testified against the shooter. Mike Boone recently retired. Less than two weeks ago, I was police chief of Marshall, NC, a small town in western North Carolina. Mike had over 30 years of service as a law enforcement officer. On August 2nd, 20,24, Chief Boone was killed in an auto accident by a wanted fugitive in a stolen car traveling at a high rate of speed in the wrong lane of the Interstate. A suspect who was wanted for several outstanding felony warrants and suspected in the death of his girlfriend. He struck Chief Boone head-on. Killing him at exit 11 on I-26.
