OutCasting Media produces public radios LGBTQ youth programs and related content. It presents a look at issues pertaining to the LGBT community as seen through the eyes of young LGBTQ people and allies and provides insight into the broad dimensions of the LGBTQ youth experience. OutCasting goes far beyond mainstream media coverage, which tends to be limited and sensationalist. And just as important as the issues we cover is the outlet that OutCasting gives to these young voices: a population still marginalized, potentially victimized, and rarely heard.)

01/04/2017On this edition of OutCasting OffAir, OutCaster Lucy of our bureau at Michigan State University talks about queerbaiting, a tactic used in some TV shows to hint that certain characters may be LGBTQ, and thus baiting LGBTQ viewers, only to subsequently pull the rug out, putting those characters into opposite-gender relationships, tossing in LGBTQ jokes, or denying in interviews that they ever intended the characters to be anything but straight. This can be a problem for LGBTQ youth who need to see actual LGBTQ characters.

21/03/2017In this program, LGBTQ youth are connected to gay history through a discussion with Christopher Z. Hobson, a gay elder. On this edition, our guest is Christopher Z. Hobson, a gay elder, talking about what it was like to be a gay teenager in the 1950s, surviving psychotherapy, joining the movement, becoming an activist, and passing down gay history. Chris's mother was the author Laura Z. Hobson, who wrote the novel Gentleman's Agreement (about antisemitism in the years following World War II and made into an Oscar-winning film in the late 1940s). She later wrote the novel Consenting Adult, about a son coming out to his parents, told mainly from the mother's point of view. Laura loosely based the character of the son in the novel on her real son -- Chris.

01/09/2016Jamie, an OutCasting youth participant for three years, is working this summer as a music instructor at a day camp for children. (Jamie prefers they/them pronouns.) During the summer, Jamie got an upcut -- a haircut a bit longer on top and with buzzed sides and back. One day, an eight-year-old girl said something insulting to Jamie about their upcut. On this edition of OutCasting OffAir, Jamie explores the gender norms that seem to have prompted the comment and talks about how they use these opportunities to talk about hair and gender norms with other children.
