Dr. Stamm is an athletic trainer, neuroscientist and concussion researcher. This is obviously a big deal and it has become even more of a discussion with some of the high profile injuries that have occurred in the NFL. In this episode we talk about what has been happening with these injuries and a lot of the details around them and what it all means. We discuss the fencing response, second impact syndrome, and the ability for patients to make informed decisions after suffering a traumatic brain injury. Each of these topics is huge and could take an entire episode but we discuss the basics of each to create a baseline for discussion going forward and also highlight the importance of being conservative when managing these injuries. Kim is an athletic training at the high school level but is also very involved in clinical research through Cincinnati Children Hospital. In this episode we talk a lot about research and how it can be beneficial to athletic trainers to get involved in research and apply it to their clinical setting.   Kim has worked on some of the very highest level projects when it comes to ACL injury and has been able to take everything she does in the lab and apply it directly to her work in the clinical setting.  Kim discussed the evidence based tripod and how important it is acknowledge all three pillars. We also discuss how research can be more than just running experiments in a lab and there is so much any athletic trainer can do in their clinical setting without a huge background knowledge on high level research processes. • REPLAY: Ep. 52: Chelsea Matthew-AT Impact, Beyond Athletics

    22/09/2022 Duración: 49min

Athletic training is a unique health care profession that in many of the “traditional” settings allows for patient interaction at minimum on a daily basis. This provides a unique opportunity for athletic trainers to be more to their athletes than just prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehab. Bonds of trust can get built as we often learn more about person lives than other health care providers are able to.   Chelsea Matthew, an ATC in the secondary setting, has been doing this her entire career. Not only has she taken care of her athletes physically and mentally when she worked with them at their school, it has extended beyond that time and she continues to help them out as they go through life.   In this episode Chelsea highlights the impact athletic trainers can have on the patients they serve and why it is so important to understand it is more beyond the physical aspect of the profession. Chelsea has some fantastic insights and resources to share. Please enjoy this episode.

  • REPLAY: Ep. 86: Dichotomy in AT

    16/09/2022 Duración: 43min

Di’kademe/: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.   Moving to one extreme or the other can be hard to balance, especially if you try and make two seemingly opposing views/perspectives try and mix together and champion both of them. This is where dichotomy comes from and the concept that you have to find balance. There are times to be aggressive but you have to be able to double back with caution because you can’t run yourself in only one direction and then immediately make a switch. Recognizing and embracing the dichotomy of ideas is important to all professions but can have some serious implications in athletic training. It is important to recognize the wide range of differing ideas but also be able to balance those in order to be maximally effective. • REPLAY: Ep. 61: Joel Luedke-Empowering AT Leadership

    31/08/2022 Duración: 57min

Roles got reversed in this episode as Austin and Greg interview Joel. Joel has talked for more recently about the importance of looking at AT Services, not AT Servants and the importance of working “with” coaches and fellow administrators, not “for” them. This has been a shift that has been occurring over Joel’s last 4-5 years of practice in the profession.  The shift in thinking began when Joel started leading a group of ATs and started to see the amount of service and hours being requested of them didn’t match the compensation, not even close.  The realization that while we can’t always control the salary we can control the hours to make that salary meaningful and allow time for a person to find alternative work. It also happened when changing the mindset to working “with” coaches and that while we are a service industry, professional courtesy can and should happen. Being adaptable is what ATs do, but that has to go both ways.  Finally, we talk about ideas to help empower ATs moving forward a

  • Ep. 112: Courtney Fernandes-Project Chaos

    20/07/2022 Duración: 43min

In this episode we talk with Courtney Fernando’s who just finished up her masters work at the University of Toledo. While she was there she was part of an interesting research project named, ‘Project Chaos’. The name alone grabbed our attention and so we wanted to talk with Courtney about what the project was and how it can impact rehabilitation going forward. The conversation was extremely interesting and there is a lot that this project attempted to take a look at. If you are listening to this, please check out the YouTube video for videos showing the actual testing. The preliminary results from this study take a look at how we can potentially better understand the return to sport process for athletes and how they respond in uncertain environments. This is a key aspect of the rehabilitation process and one that can be hard to mimic in a traditional rehabilitation setting. This was a very interesting project and a great discussion on it, please enjoy. LINK: https://www.athletictrainingchat.com/2022/07/ep-11
