7-24. The Lynching of Bob Brackett in. Western North Carolina, 1897, A young lady in her early 20's walked home from church. The young woman went slowly, as she had been crippled by meningitis when she was younger. She lived nearby with her parents near the town of Weaverville. At 11:30 that day, she was attacked. Shoved to the roadway by a large man. He dragged her into the roadside woods and assaulted her. After the assault a crowd formed, looking for a suspect. Finding one, the mob acted. Was it justice? 7-23. Lavinia Fisher. The first female serial killer in the U.S.? Lavinia Fisher was thought by some to be the first female serial killer in the United States of America. Married to John Fisher, they operated a boarding house along a major commercial roadway outside of Charleston S.C.  Both were convicted of several crimes. But. Was she a killer? A shade of blue story that starts at Muddy Creek in Forsyth County North Carolina. Or perhaps it ends there. A very popular fishing location at the time and still is by some accounts. Two local men on the 25th of August 1914 while fishing discovered something in the water that would impact a family for decades. 15 feet from the bank the object hung on the surface of the water. One of the men doing what comes naturally, he poked it with his fishing pole.  Unfortunately, the object stirred and shifted in the water revealing a dead man's naked body. 7-19. 1859, Missing Girl, Missing Body. Murder? A missing girl. Suspicions of murder. the body never found. A prominent Rockingham County NC  farmer,  hanged for her murder in 1860. A precedent-setting case in North Carolina law. It allowed the state to convict a person of murder without there being a corpus delicti  better known as the body of the victim It was Dec. 1, 1859, when Peggy was last seen by her family; approximately a year later a  farmer hung for her death. Peggy's body was never found. 7-6. The day they hung Santa. December 1927. Santa followed by a group of local children walked down the street heading to the First National Bank. Leaving the children outside but accompanied by three men he walked into the bank. Greetings of “hello Santa” was met with a shouting Santa telling everyone to “grab some sky” in a less than jolly tone.  This was the start of shootings, manhunts, car chases, and injuries. A total of eight were wounded. Including Santa and his stealing elves, six men would end up dead.
