The young woman went slowly, as she had been crippled by meningitis when she was younger. She lived nearby with her parents near the town of Weaverville. At 11:30 that day, she was attacked. Shoved to the roadway by a large man. He dragged her into the roadside woods and assaulted her. After the assault a crowd formed, looking for a suspect. Finding one, the mob acted. Was it justice? A very popular fishing location at the time and still is by some accounts. Two local men on the 25th of August 1914 while fishing discovered something in the water that would impact a family for decades. 15 feet from the bank the object hung on the surface of the water. One of the men doing what comes naturally, he poked it with his fishing pole. Unfortunately, the object stirred and shifted in the water revealing a dead man's naked body. Leaving the children outside but accompanied by three men he walked into the bank. Greetings of “hello Santa” was met with a shouting Santa telling everyone to “grab some sky” in a less than jolly tone. This was the start of shootings, manhunts, car chases, and injuries.
