IU men's basketball podcast: the IDS answers questions from fans
26/02/2019 Duración: 43minLast week brought more of the same for the IU men's basketball team, although the losses came in a different way than usual. Double Feature Episode 16: 'Black Panther', 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' are fun, fresh
23/02/2019 Duración: 21minWelcome to back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones too. Many action movies are intensely formulaic, with most going down the list of what's expected of an action movie: A car chase, a bomb that's going to go off at some point and lots of wasted bullets. The same expectation of formula can be applied to superhero movies, with the basic roles of good guy with powers versus bad guy with powers. On this week's episode of Double Feature, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester discuss two films from 2018 that stick to formulas, but are so good it doesn't matter: "Black Panther" and "Mission: Impossible - Fallout." "Black Panther" became a cultural moment when it was released a little over a year ago and introduced audiences to the world of Wakanda. It's now nominated for seven Academy Awards, including now being the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" is

IU basketball podcast: Men's team reaches new low point of season with loss at Minnesota
18/02/2019 Duración: 39minIU men's basketball's poor 2019 season continued last week, as the Hoosiers lost at Minnesota by 21 points. The loss means the Hoosiers have dropped 10 of their last 11 games, although a stretch of four consecutive games against quality Big Ten opponents presents IU with a final chance to salvage its season. Indiana Daily Student men's basketball writer Cameron Drummond and women's basketball writer Dylan Wallace recap the blowout loss to Minnesota, discuss IU's many offensive flaws and take a look at both IU's men's and women's teams as their regular seasons near an end. PODCAST SEGMENTS: 1:10 — Just how surprising was the way IU's loss at Minnesota played out? 4:10 — Evaluating IU's defensive performance against Minnesota's Jordan Murphy 7:12 — Romeo Langford's lack of aggressiveness for the Hoosiers 15:00 — A look at how the rest of the season shapes up for IU 21:40 — A recap of the season so far for the IU women's basketball team 33:00 — How will the season likely end for the men's and women's teams?

Double Feature Episode 15: 'The Favourite' and 'Phantom Thread' make period dramas fun
14/02/2019 Duración: 21minWelcome back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones too. Period pieces are usually boring. Movies featuring stuffy actors wearing petticoats and speaking in bad English accents are the norm when it comes to a certain genre of historical movie. On this week's episode of Double Feature, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester celebrate two recent sleek, subversive and sexy period pieces that aren't afraid to stir the pot: 2017's "Phantom Thread" and 2018's "The Favourite." "Phantom Thread" was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson — notable for the porn epic "Boogie Nights" and the oil boom-set drama "There Will Be Blood — and was nominated for six Oscars at the 90th Academy Awards. While it only won one for Best Costume Design, some consider the film to be one of Anderson's best. "The Favourite" is a dark comedy following two cousins trying to win the favor of Queen Anne of England in the 18th cen

IU men's basketball podcast: IU fails to maintain momentum from Michigan State win
11/02/2019 Duración: 36minDespite an upset win on the road against Michigan State, the IU men's basketball team has failed to maintain any momentum. IU followed the Michigan State win with a pair of home losses to Iowa and Ohio State, dropping its record to 13-11 overall and 4-9 in conference games. Indiana Daily Student men's basketball writers Cameron Drummond and Murphy Wheeler discuss IU's offensive problems and whether or not the team will reach the NCAA Tournament. PODCAST SEGMENTS: 1:10 - A recap of IU's terrible 2019 4:00 - The sense of urgency surrounding the IU program 5:00 - Offensive problems and potential adjustments for IU to make 11:30 - Can Juwan Morgan or Romeo Langford single-handedly stop IU's downward spiral? 17:00 - Could Jake Forrester help this IU team? 22:20 - Justin Smith as a metaphor for the entire IU season 27:20 - Setting the stage for the rest of the IU season 31:00 - The case for, and the case against, IU being in the NCAA Tournament

Double Feature Episode 14: Alfonso Cuarón shines in 'Y Tu Mamá También' and 'Roma'
10/02/2019 Duración: 22minWelcome back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones too. With years of internationally acclaimed work, a distinct philosophical look at the nature of connections and a new film with 10 Academy Award nominations, Mexican writer and director Alfonso Cuarón has made a name for himself as a critical darling with an eternally-fresh artistic eye. On this week’s episode of Double Feature, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester discuss arguably his two most personal works: 2001’s coming-of-age drama “Y Tu Mamá También” and 2018’s black-and-white tale of a live-in housekeeper, “Roma.” “Y Tu Mamá También” follows two teenage boys who go on a road trip with an older married woman, but it’s so much more than the wacky sex romp that it sounds like it is. It even earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, despite some controversy over explicit sex and drug use. When it came time to make “Roma”, Cuarón de

IU men's basketball podcast: IU ends losing streak with upset win at Michigan State
04/02/2019 Duración: 31minAfter a seven-game losing streak, the IU men's basketball season was energized last weekend with a stunning upset win in East Lansing, Michigan. The Hoosiers defeated the then-No. 6 ranked Spartans for their first road win in the series since February 2013, a win that also changes the trajectory of this IU season. Indiana Daily Student men's basketball writers Ben Portnoy and Murphy Wheeler discuss the ramifications of IU's victory, as well as the effect the win has on the Hoosiers' NCAA Tournament hopes. PODCAST SEGMENTS: 0:36 - How did IU defeat then-No. 6 Michigan State on the road? 2:40 - The return of De'Ron Davis and Devonte Green for IU 5:39 - IU's depth is once again a strength for the Hoosiers 9:00 - Does one win fix all of IU's problems? 14:00 - Looking forward to the rest of IU's schedule 19:20 - NCAA Tournament discussion 26:00 - NCAA Tournament predictions

Double Feature Episode 13: 'First Reformed' and 'The Tree of Life' aptly discuss faith
31/01/2019 Duración: 19minWelcome to back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones too. Generally speaking, faith-based films usually suck. More often than not, they tend to be pandering, flat and completely derivative. Filmmakers rarely have the courage to tackle the nuances of spirituality or look at the uglier sides of what it means to live a religious life. On this week's episode of Double Feature, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester discuss two films that do: 2011's "The Tree of Life" and 2017's "First Reformed." "The Tree of Life," directed by Terrence Malick, stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain in an epic comparing a man's memory of growing up in 1950s Texas with the origins of the universe and life on Earth. "First Reformed," directed by Paul Schrader, follows the Reverend Ernst Toller — played by Ethan Hawke in a performance many say deserved an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor — as he wrestles with

28/01/2019 Duración: 41minIU has now gone nearly a month without a victory after losing its last six games. The Hoosiers now sit at 12-8 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play with a pair of daunting road games on the schedule for this week. IU plays at Rutgers on Wednesday night before a Saturday night contest at Michigan State. Indiana Daily Student men's basketball writers Ben Portnoy, Cameron Drummond and Murphy Wheeler discuss potential solutions for IU, as well as what the realistic expectations should be for the team for the rest of the season. Double Feature Epsisode 12: This year's Oscar nominations are a mixed bag
24/01/2019 Duración: 23minWelcome back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones, too. Every year, movie nerds anticipate the nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, better known as just the Academy, to see if their favorite films of the year get any recognition leading up to the Oscars. The nominations are the moment when all the awards show buzz either falls flat or propels a picture to the canon of movies worth seeing. This year's nominations are a mixed bag. This week, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester are breaking the usual format to discuss the highs and lows of the nominations, which were announced earlier this week. For example, the thoughtful and beautiful films "Roma" and "The Favourite" are both up for Best Picture, but Barry Jenkins' latest film, "If Beale Street Could Talk," wasn't even nominated in that category. This is only a couple years after Jenkins' "Moonlight" took home the same aw

IDS Men's Basketball Podcast: Four-game losing streak marks brutal January for the Hoosiers
21/01/2019 Duración: 40minAfter a 3-0 start to Big Ten Conference play, the IU men's basketball team has gone through its roughest stretch of the season. IU has lost its last four games, including this past week's contests at home against Nebraska and at Purdue, to drop to 3-4 in conference games and 12-6 overall for the season. Indiana Daily Student men’s basketball writers Cameron Drummond and Ben Portnoy discuss the reasons for IU's recent downturn in fortunes, any positives to come out of a 15-point road loss at Purdue and look ahead to the importance of this week's games as IU looks to stay in the NCAA Tournament picture. Brendan Quinn of The Athletic Detroit also joins the podcast to help preview IU's rematch against Michigan this Friday night. Double Feature Episode 11: 'Paddington 2' and 'The Last Unicorn' take kids seriously
17/01/2019 Duración: 17minWelcome back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones, too. A lot of children’s movies have a habit of talking down to or tailoring themselves to their audience, favoring cutesy kitsch over impactful storytelling. On this new episode of Double Feature, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester discuss two children’s movies that are wonderful specifically because they don’t do that: "Paddington 2," and "The Last Unicorn." "Paddington 2," the story of our hero Paddington Bear trying to find a birthday present for his Aunt Lucy, is currently the highest rated film on Rotten Tomatoes. What appears to be a straight-forward movie for children ends up touching on topics like the hostility of modern society towards immigrants as well as the injustices inherent within the criminal justice system. It's still about a CGI bear who loves marmalade sandwiches, though. "The Last Unicorn" is a 1982 animated fever dream of a m

Double Feature Episode 10: The Midwest in "Monrovia, Indiana" and "Columbus"
10/01/2019 Duración: 18minWelcome back to Double Feature, the Indiana Daily Student film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes and maybe some lukewarm ones, too. The Midwestern identity has been the subject of a lot of scrutiny in recent years. There was a lot of conjecture from people living on the coasts about the Midwest after the 2016 election — who lives in small towns in states like Indiana? What are their lives like? In this episode of Double Feature, hosts Annie Aguiar and Chris Forrester talk about two films from the last two years that attempt to answer that question, with different levels of success: "Monrovia, Indiana" and "Columbus." These films both offer looks into small town Indiana life as veteran documentarian Frederick Wiseman takes viewers into day-to-day scenes in "Monrovia, Indiana" and debut director Kogonada makes the audience think — and cry — about what it's like to both love and hate the place you're from.

IDS Men's Basketball Podcast: IU's winning streak comes to an end with loss at Michigan
07/01/2019 Duración: 43minAfter winning seven consecutive games following a blowout loss at Duke University, the IU men's basketball team was dealt its third road loss of the season Sunday night. The Hoosiers fell by 11 points against the then-No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines, a game in which IU never led. Injuries, foul trouble and a slow start to the game doomed IU from the opening tipoff, but a resurgent second-half performance gave the Hoosiers some momentum despite the loss. With 16 more conference games left to close out the season, Indiana Daily Student basketball writers Cameron Drummond and Ben Portnoy, along with special guest and former IDS staffer Andrew Hussey from Michigan's Rivals' website, The Wolverine, dissect what happened during Sunday's game and what it means for both IU and Michigan going forward. PODCAST SEGMENTS: 2:25 - What went wrong for IU and what went right for Michigan during Sunday's game? 6:35 - Going inside the box score for IU and Michigan 9:45 - Will IU ever find a consistent third scoring opt

03/12/2018 Duración: 44minFollowing a 21-point road loss at Duke, the IU men's basketball team put on a gritty performance to defeat Northwestern, 68-66, to begin Big Ten Conference play this weekend. IU now looks toward starting 2-0 in conference play with a game at Penn State scheduled for Tuesday night. But, the Hoosiers may have to play the Nittany Lions without the services of senior forward Juwan Morgan. IDS men's basketball writers Cameron Drummond, Ben Portnoy and Murphy Wheeler recap the past week of IU hoops, which also featured a major recruiting victory for IU Coach Archie Miller. Additionally, the trio takes a look at the recent ESPN 30 for 30 documentary "The Last Days of Knight," which chronicled the downfall of former IU Coach Bob Knight.
