No Limits

This week marks the annual Indiana Authors Award Dinner and Indy Author Fair. Our guests will be Regional Author Winner, poet Adrian Metejka and Laura Wills of the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation/Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award Coordinator.

Our continuing support of the American Graduate initiative brings three diverse perspectives in the goal of helping students on the road to a high school diploma. Our guests will be 100 Black Men board president James Duke; Jennifer Burk, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Central Indiana; and Lauren Hall, co-founder of Indy Pulse, a slam-poetry project aimed at students.

Following up on the progress anticipated in an earlier No Limits, "Thriving Communities, Thriving State." Our update details that (1) each of the three commissions now have 3-4 focus areas that will be the basis of their community recommendations at the project's conclusion; and guests talk about their reasons for serving as project co-chairs.. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and our show will be about Mental Health. Our guests are National Alliance on Mental Illness Indiana Executive Dirctor, Josh Sprunger; Mental Health Alliance Indiana Director of Development David Berman; and longtime local broadcaster and mental health speaker Patty Spitler.

Several groups are coming together during this mayoral election cycle to examine just why voter apathy plagues Hoosiers so. Guests include Dr. Matt Bergbower of Indiana State University, an expert on voter behavior.

Host Jon Krull talks with former Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith joins John in-studio for reflections on governing in Indianapolis when the city was on the climb to becoming the vibrant midwestern hub it is today.

McKinney law school project "Rupturing the School to Prison Pipeline." The law school students found that many student offenses that would have previously been addressed with detention or in-school suspension are now landing students in the criminal justice system. The White River Festival, with events taking place over several days in different locations, placing a spotlight on Central Indiana's water resources and the critical challenges that face them including water quality and quantity issues. Navigating the waters of post-secondary education can be tough for anyone, but especially for those whose family experience in college is limited or non-existent. We'll learn about an important event this weekend in Indianapolis designed to put students on the right track through the Center For Leadership Development's College Prep Conference and College Fair.

UIndy/IMHC public policy study program - making the case for public policy internships in programs like the Indiana Minority Health Coalition. The results are in for the first year of the internship program, and they are high. Gillespie says the internships not only extended the brand of the IMHC at the Statehouse but were also instrumental in making solid connections between legislators and public health.
