Today our guest will be Tory Zellick. Tory Zellick is a young woman who transitioned into adulthood while caring for, and emotionally supporting, her mother through a six-and-a-half year battle with breast cancer. At the age of eighteen, Tory found herself traveling the unanticipated path of caregiver; overwhelmed and unsure of what was to come next. After her mother’s passing in 2009, Tory, along with her father and brother, spent time traveling through South East Asia, reflecting on all that had occurred over the past several years. Out of that reflection time was born The Medical Day Planner. It is Tory’s hope that The Medical Day Planner will provide organizational help and guidance to others who find themselves in a similar caregiving situation. Dementia: What You Need to Make Person Centered Care Real I'm thrilled to have Debbie Richman with the Minnesota Alzheimer's Association with us. Debbie has a great background and a wonderful attitude on how to live well with dementia.  I heard her speak for the first time about two months ago and was so impressed with her insights and ability to communicate simple techniques which bring respect, dignity and a sense of calm when dealing with Dementia. Another family member touched by Alzheimer's disease and making a difference!  Join us in a fascinating discussion. Tyler Jury, a senior at Western Kentucky University, is a native of Elizabethtown, KY.  He is a soon-to-be graduate of WKU with a double major in Chemistry and Biology. Tyler's passion for Alzheimer's comes from his experience with his grandfather's diagnosis in 2005 and eventual death in 2009. Tyler founded Fijis Across America- A Cross Country Bike Ride to Raise Money and Awareness for Alzheimer's Research- in 2009 to honor and commemorate his grandfather's life as well as to raise awareness about this horrific disease. Six riders, led by Jury, rode over 3,200 miles on their bicycles through nine states during the summer of 2010 and through their efforts were able to raise over $56,000 towards the cause. This year, a group of men in Tyler's fraternity at WKU have decided to take up the ride again to continue the fight against Alzheimer's. Their group is known as Bike4Alz, and can be found on F

Cathie Borrie has degrees in health & law, but nothing prepared her for the seven years she spent caring for her mother, who had Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's.  Along this heartbreaking and unexpectedly fascinating journey she discovered that recording conversations with her mother, writing a memoir, and learning to ballroom dance were ways to tell both her and her mother's story. Naomi Feil the Founder of  the Validation Program shares and celebrates her 30 year journey shifting our dementia care culture.  Naomi Feil, M.S.W., A.C.S.W., is the developer of Validation. She was born in Munich in 1932, and grew up in the Montefiore Home for the Aged in Cleveland Ohio, where her father was the administrator and her mother, the head of the Social Service Department. After graduating with a Masters degree in Social Work from Columbia University in New York, she began working with the elderly. Between 1963 and 1980 Mrs. Feil developed Validation as a response to her dissatisfaction with traditional methods of working with the severely disoriented old-old people who were her clients. In 1982 she published her first book, Validation: The Feil Method, which was revised in 1992. Her second book, The Validation Breakthrough, was published in 1993, and updated and revised in 2002.
