Eileen's husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2001, at age 54. After his diagnosis Eileen spent 8 years on the local Alzheimer's Board plus 3 on Alzheimer’s New Zealand board. Eileen is a strong and sometimes outspoken advocate for young onset Alzheimer's and more especially spent a lot of time lobbying for subsidies on anticholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon). In 2011 Eileen retired from work and has recently published a book telling of the last 12 years caring for Ray and the challenges that they faced, specifically related top young onset Alzheimers.
