The Arian controversy continues to rage in the is episode. The Popes of Rome are caught in a roiling theological battle over not only the nature of Jesus Christ in the trinity, but also how the secular Roman State and Christianity would interact and relate to each other. The Pope of Rome Liberius would be banished for his beliefs, but then possibly return because he capitulated on those beliefs. Anthony of Egypt is referred to as the Father of Christian Monasticism. We’ll take a closer look to see if this title is appropriate or if it was a marketing device used by the powerful Patriarch of Alexandria, Athanasius. Monks and monasteries will be incredibly important to the development of Christianity in both the west and the east. The First Ecumenical Council, or world-wide synod, which took place at Nicaea in modern day Turkey, involved many of the biggest names of the day and really turned the Roman world on its head. Christianity, which was a heavily persecuted religion, became the preferred religion of the Empire all in the course of a few short years. The canons of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea were extremely important for the history of Christianity. These canons each come with a story of their own that ties together the past and future of the religion. We will continue to discuss the canons that concerned the clergy and the various ways these canons have been interpreted throughout history. The first ecumenical council, the First Council of Nicaea in 325AD, was a pivotal moment in Christianity. Once the Creed of Nicaea was defined, the bishops at the Council had a number of important issues they needed deal with. The bishops at the council created twenty canons, or rules of faith that created the guidelines the clergy and the laity would follow going forward. Constantine’s purpose for calling an ecumenical council was to stabilize and unify the Roman Empire. For many reasons, the Empire was neither stabilized nor unified. Theological battles were raging inside of the Empire and groups outside of the borders of the Empire were on the move. Arius may have been the spiritual leader of the subordinationist party, but Eusebius, Bishop of Nicomedia was the real muscle behind the movement. The creed or statement of beliefs from the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea was what the whole thing was really about.  The Church and Constantine had a whole agenda of other various gripes, issues and complaints they needed to address, but the creed or basic beliefs of the Church and by default mainstream Christianity was the main event. The First Ecumenical Council, The Council of Nicaea, wasn’t just about Arianism. The Council had a laundry list of controversies, problems, gripes and grievances to deal with which had built up in the Christian Church since day one. Constantine the Great wanted a unified Empire and what he needed to attain that goal was a unified religion. Setting a uniform date for the celebration of Easter, the most important holiday in the religion was of huge importance in creating uniformity. Arianism might not have been the idea of Arius of Alexandria alone, but he was the one who definitely popularized that set of theological positions. The writings, creeds and canons of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325 made it very clear where the Church stood on Arianism and what the Christian God was all about, but that didn’t mean everything was written in stone.
