His wife Marcia is a pediatric occupational therapist in Ohio and they live in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. Marcia and Howard have six children and nine grandchildren between them. He was ordained in 1992 and served Zion United Church of Christ, Norwood, Ohio, United Church of Christ of Covington, Ohio, and is currently serving St. Mark United Church of Christ, Latonia, KY. From 1972 to 1992 he was a professor of Art and head of the department of art at Northern Kentucky University. His degrees are a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute, MA and MFA from University of California, Berkeley, and MDiv from United Theological Seminary.On June 1, 1985, while dying in a hospital in Paris, France he had a Near Death Experience that involved being tormented in hell, calling out to Jesus, being saved, given a life review,
