Dr. Norton cautions not to rely on motivation to get fit. Motivation is a poor way to do anything. Forming good habits can be much more powerful because motivation won't be there all the time. Don't look at a diet as punishment. Look at it as a commitment you're making to get to the next level. You're not going to stumble into your goals.
