Ageism is prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age. Ageism in recruitment is an increasing problem. This is a very common practice of discrimination in job hiring by companies and businesses. The AARP reports that 1 in 5 workers in the United States is over the age of 55 Nearly 65 percent of workers say that they have experienced agebased discrimination at work and 58 percent of those surveyed believe that ageism became apparent starting at age 50. I have seen this concern from people at the age of 30 and 40. Ageism is a serious issue that should be treated the same as sex, race, and disability based discrimination. Raising public awareness about the issues ageism creates can help. As the population of older adults continues to increase, finding ways to minimize ageism will become increasingly important.
