Hoy que nuestra radio está intimamente ligada a la publicación Perro Negro, hemos desempolvado -pero sólo un tanto- un programa que hicimos sobre las revistas culturales hispanoaméricanas. Hablamos de Martín Fierro, Sur, Amauta, Revista de Occidente, Marcha, Mito, Letras Libres, Taller, Vuelta, Letras Libres, Orígenes y también títulos contemporáneos. Anotamos el papel que jugaron personajes como Borges, Oliverio Girondo, Victoria Ocampo, Ortega y Gasset, José Carlos Mariátegui, Onetti, Jorge Gaitán Durán, Valencia Goelkel, Octavio Paz y Lezama Lima entre otros. Nos referimos a las épocas que enmarcaron sus páginas e igualmente las tareas que se propusieron y el legado que dejaron. Es una breve historia sobre las publicaciones culturales más representativas y de cómo la lengua castellana se ha ido buscando desde comienzos del siglo pasado un lugar entre las ideas del mundo. Nonetheless, we spoke to Martin Freedman -a former currency trader and nowadays a financial analyst, blogger and a leftie with a small "L"- about all things regarding Brexit and the economy. We touched on the "Leftxitiers", a term he has coined to describe people of the left who has supported the idea of UK leaving the EU. We chat about the social-neoliberalism of New Labour under Blair and Brown, taxation, the supposed "fair" trade under WTO rules and how Europe first split Labour in the 70's and now the Tories. Published at a time when Magic Realism was at its peak, Que viva la música -by Andrés Caicedo or Liveforever as it has been published in English by Penguin Modern Classics- is one of the very few Latin American novels that until this day celebrates youth culture. Tragically commemorated since its young author committed suicide the same day he received the first printed copy, it is a cultural and spiritual portrait of a city, Cali in Colombia, in the early 1970s. A deceptively subversive novel in terms of its language and the emotional politics of urban youth. A remarkable literary gem still unknown outside its native Colombia. This programme, part of the Authors in Search of a Reader series, was recorded in front of a live audience at the Instituto Cervantes in London with the stellar participation of its translator, Frank Wynne, and the linguist and educator Gustavo García. The great Jorge Luis Borges once said that literature in English was infinite. Assuming he was right implies that English readers do not need to venture beyond their language to enjoy the telling of tales. A bit more than 20 years ago a small publishing house in UK decided to bet against it. Pushkin Press is the highly reputable London based editorial house dedicated to the difficult task of bringing authors in translation to the Anglo-speaking reader. Mental illness is one of the biggest taboos in our relentlessly productive society. La cocaína, querámoslo o no, es un producto cultural asociado con Latinoamérica en general y con Colombia en particular. Can art heal? Does it really have curative powers? If you ask South African born artist, globe trotter ceramist and polyglot painter Georgie Donnelly, she will answer with an emphatic "Yes". There are few and far between artists who always defy categorisation. The singer, rapper and hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux is one of them. Born in Lille, France, of Chilean parents exiled from Pinochet regime, she was then brought up in Paris and "re-educated" in Chile. Ana is the daughter of a famous sociologist mother and a political scientist father who exposed her to jazz and 70's political song writers from Latin America. She is already a celebrated musician who embodies the truly global community spirit of our time. Her music gives voice to the muted and marginalised members of our societies. She is, in her own words, "an optimist in theory but a pessimist in practice" who nevertheless manages to bring a message of transgenerational hope and resistance to all of us.
