  • World Ocean Radio 1/1/25: At the Fishhouses

    01/01/2025 Duración: 04min

Host: Peter Neill Producer: Trisha Badger ABOUT THIS EPISODE This week on World Ocean Radio we share our yearly reading of Elizabeth Bishop’s poem At the Fishhouses. In its richly-detailed mastery, it distills Bishop’s seaside meditations, evokes the clarity of meaning contained in personal encounters at the shore and with the ocean, and holds the reader and the listener in the space that lies between land and sea, a site of transience, mystery, and the sublime. At the Fishhouses is a clear favorite for the New Year. We hope it is for you, too, whether you are revisiting a reading or are hearing it for the first time. It speaks to all of us that dwell at the water’s edge, in a physical space or merely in the mind. Cold dark deep and absolutely clear, element bearable to no mortal, to fish and to seals . . . Happy New Year from World Ocean Radio and World Ocean Observatory. The sea connects all things. WORLD OCEAN RADIO 5-mi

  • A Word in Edgewise 12/30/24: Years Are Like Swimming Pools . . .

    30/12/2024 Duración: 08min

Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I’m RW Estela: Since 1991, I’ve been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU’s longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, s

  • Coastal Conversations 12/27/24: Cape Elizabeth

    27/12/2024 Duración: 27min

Host: Galen Koch Coastal Conversations: Conversations with people who live, work, and play on the Maine coast, hosted by the University of Maine Sea Grant Program. This month: This program features an episode of Island Institute’s podcast, From the Sea Up. In the town of Cape Elizabeth, in Southern Maine, there’s one last strip of commercial access on the waterfront. This access, situated within Kettle Cove State Park beside neighboring Crescent Beach, is, at high tide, just wide enough to get a boat trailer into the water and launch a skiff to get to the mooring field. In the summertime, this access and the adjacent parking lot are heavily congested. A recent redevelopment plan by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands has caused a lot of anxiety for commercial fishermen, who fear that the state will redirect recreational boating and public access from a small strip on Crescent Beach to the commercial zone at Kettle Cove State Park. In this episode we hear from fishermen in the Cape Elizabeth Fishermen’s Allian
