Eric Blanc on the teachers' strike wave in the United States
22/07/2019 Duración: 14minIn February 2018, in an extremely important development that might yet prove to be a historical turning point, teachers in the so-called red state of West Virginia, a Republican Party-supporting state which helped sweep Donald Trump to the White House, decided to go on strike. Remarkably, this would be the beginning of a teachers' strike wave that would engulf not only other red states like Oklahoma, Arizona and Kentucky, but eventually spread to Oakland and Los Angeles in California. Eric Blanc is a former teacher and writer whose Red State Revolt: The Teachers' Strike Wave and Working-Class Politics, published earlier this year by Verso Books, is the single best account of the still ongoing strike wave.

Richard Denniss on the federal budget
08/04/2019 Duración: 09minWhen it comes to federal budgets, we hear the same blathering nonsense from politicians year in, year out. While major corporations pay little or no tax on multi-billion dollar profits, we're told the rest of us must tighten our belts, and be fiscally responsible in the face of economic headwinds and mounting debts and deficits. Above all, we must as a nation constantly work towards budget surpluses, a theme so often repeated it might as well be a religious mantra.
