Host: David Green We focused our August "Spotlight" on RiseUP for Arts, a member organization that, though based in Hartford, is active in organizing mural projects around Connecticut, including in our region of Fairfield County. We speak with executive director Matt Conway about how this organization trains artists, negotiates with municipalities and building owners, raises funds and coordinates the completion of amazing murals, often working with young people. Other guests include three artists involved in RiseUP projects: Alissa Siegal, Lauren Clayton and John Paul O'Grodnick as well as with building owner Mitchell Kidd, with The Wellbuilt Company, that has sponsored murals in Stamford, and Marc Alan, with the Norwalk Arts & Culture Commission. A conversation with Rylee Haupt, co-founder of Climate Defiance, a youth-led organization that has generated lots of buzz with its aggressive nonviolent direct action campaign against politicians and companies that are sending the planet into climate scorching territory.

State Poet Laureate Antoinette Brim-Bell joined WPKN's Valerie Richardson to talk about her work and her tenure as the state's Poet Laureate. She also spoke about an upcoming event where she will be joined by poets Marilyn Nelson, Kate Rushin, and Rhonda Ward. The four poets partnered with the Witness Stones Old Lyme Project and created a verse cycle to capture the forgotten voices of the enslaved in Lyme, Connecticut. The poets will talk about their creative process including their work with historian, Carolyn Wakeman, to uncover the stories of the long ago enslaved including Cato, Humphrey, Temperance, and Arabella.

Nick Ferrauolo is the Project Coordinator of Osprey Nation, a project of the Connecticut Audubon Society. Osprey Nation is Connecticut Audubon Society’s citizen science partnership, launched in the summer of 2014, to monitor the health of our state’s Ospreys. During the course of this effort, the numbers of successful osprey nests and human participants have continued to grow, showing the return of these magnificent "fish hawks" from near extinction in Connecticut. The goal of Osprey Nation is to create a long-term record of data that will give the conservation community a better understanding of the health of Connecticut’s Osprey population.

I welcome back to DITD Jeff Masters of the Yale Climate Connection. Jeff Masters, worked as a hurricane scientist with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters from 1986-1990. He has a Ph.D. in air pollution meteorology from the University of Michigan. In 1995, he co-founded the Weather Underground weather channel. He also was creator of the Category 6 blog, one of the Internet's most popular and widely quoted sources of extreme weather and climate change.
