  • 175: 2020 Harvest and Market Outlook

    In this special edition agri-market podcast, we invite the AHDB Market Intelligence team to review the results from the Spring Planting Variety Survey. This annual survey provides estimates for the planted area in Great Britain ahead of harvest this year. We look at the headline results from the years’ survey then analyse what this means for main arable crop sectors. Wheat We look at the regional figures on wheat planting and discuss the impact on production potential and markets. Barley To compensate for the challenges in winter cropping this season, many growers switched to spring barley. Thinking about exports, we discuss what this means for global trade. Oilseed rape The survey shows a much smaller planted area for oilseed rape this year. We breakdown the results by region and talk about the impact of a sub 1Mt crop on UK markets. 2020/21 outlook We round off the episode by discussing the outlook for the rest of the season, both at UK and global level.     Brexit and the transition arrangements are a huge challenge for the British Government. In this episode, John Bates, AHDB Senior Media & PR Manager, speaks to Tania Gesto-Casas, an AHDB policy manager based in Brussels, and Sarah Baker, AHDB Strategic Insight Manager. In light of the negotiations advancing, we have reviewed the previous scenarios prepared for farm business managers and updated analysis of how a ‘no-deal’ Brexit will impact UK farmers, reflecting the recently-announced UK Global Tariffs (UKGT).     Food a fact of Life – As part of our preparation for life alongside, Maths. English and the Sciences it’s imperative our children have a rich understanding of how food is produced, have an accurate and positive impression of farming, an idea of how to cook and the role food plays in a healthy balanced diet.  In this episode John Bates finds out how Roz Reynolds, AHDB’s head of education and nutrition, works with Roy Ballam, Managing Director and Head of education at The British Nutrition Foundation - to offer a compelling education programme, encompassing evidence-based resources and training for teachers across the UK. We also discuss the success of the ‘Grow Your Own Potatoes’ programme.  The programme offers over 2000 resources for children aged 3-16 years old, perfect for home-schooling and teaching them all about locally produced food.
