XHM #629 - "Eight lights to hold you" (2022 December 22 & 26)
20/12/2022We're in the midst of Hanukkah so since we got our counter-Christmas episode taken care of last week, this one focuses on the Jewish festival of lights though there are some songs about default holidays and December in the mix. Our soundtrack profile is not tied to Hanukkah per se but a very dear soundtrack to me: 1971's Fiddler on the Roof, the film based on the legendary musical. L'chaim! We had to hoped to do this episode live for the 2nd night of Hanukkah but Vancouver got a nasty winter storm and the roads are a mess, so commuting up the hill to UBC has been reported as treacherous. Hence, we air this on Thursday afternoon with a repeat on Boxing Day so some listeners can enjoy this during the 8 crazy nights along with the usual Monday evening spot. Chag Sameach! 1. Purple Mountains: Darkness and Cold (Purple Mountains, 2019) Drag City 2. Michel Legrand: Yentl [medley] (The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection, 2005) Silva Screen 3. XHM #628 - "The carols are coming from inside the house" (2022 December 12)
13/12/2022As the holiday season feels like it's becoming normal, for our 15th annual counter carol episode, we'll go abnormal as we profile the 1974 Canuxploitation film Black Christmas and all sorts of darker Yuletide material. We've lost some key cultural folks tied to Christmas and music, so embrace the mix. We're doing this early so you don't feel utterly weird so if past episodes were your baking soundtracks, this one might need some advanced kitchenwork. 1. Dead Kennedys: Advice from Christmas Past (Plastic Surgery Disasters, 1982) Alternative Tentacles 2. Hell Interface: Soylent Night (Whine and Missingtoe EP, 1997) V/Vm Test 3.
