The churches historical answers for depression and suicide have always been things like "You just need to have more faith", "If you loved God/Jesus more you wouldn't be depressed" and the like. While they may be great "Sunday School answers" they don't address the underlying issues that cause depression and suicide and they certainly don't minister to the families and friends caught in it's path. Depression is at epidemic proportions in the United States and if we claim to be "pro-life" we have an obligation to step up and engage those struggling around us. What can we do? How can a Christian explain what they believe and why they believe it if they are not comfortable with the Bible. A recent survey found that 88% of American have a Bible in their home with the average home having 4.7 Bibles, yet only 52% of Christians say they read the Bible at least once a week. Only 62% of Christians say that the Bible is their source of authority and truth - so what do they other 40% use as a measurement for what is truth? How do you measure the mark of a successful parent? Good grades? athletic involvement? well rounded? get into a good college? popularity? Wives Submit? Husbands do what? That sounds so archaic and out of touch. The reason we struggle with Paul's encouragement to Husbands and Wives in Ephesians 5:21-33 is because we have forgotten what Marriage was intended to look like. We have settled for mediocre and blah or bailed out when true biblical marriage is so much more. "I just don't like to sing, it is nothing against the hymns or choruses". This statement is becoming more commonplace in worship every Sunday as more and more believers mumble through the song portion of worship. The problem with that is you have the dynamic Holy Spirit of God living inside you and He has a Song to sing. Maybe we need to examine our hearts to find out why we are quenching the Holy Spirit's song each week and discover how that is affecting your day to day lives. Should Christians drink alcohol? Should Christians drink wine? Is wine evil? This passage from Ephesians 5 answers none of those questions and it is time we stop trying to make it say something it does not. It also does not imply that when a Christian is filled with the Spirit they will "act like a drunk". It also does not say that the amount of Holy Spirit we have is insufficient and we need a "second blessing" or a refill - Find out what Paul is trying to say when he reminds the Christians of Ephesus to "not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery, instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit". A little clue to help; it has little to do with you getting more Holy Spirit and a lot to do with the Holy Spirit getting more of you!
