Alas, the White Sox beat the Cubs 4-3. Nico Hoerner now has as many homers as Carlos Correa. He has more homers than Kris Bryant if you want to go that far. Patrick Wisdom added another homer shortly after and then the Cubs offense stalled and failed miserably in the 8th inning to get a runner in from third base with zero out. It's just one of many things wrong with this team right now. The Cubs dropped the first of two in the Crosstown Classic in a wet one at Wrigley Field. The White Sox scored two unearned runs in the second inning and then Tim Anderson added another in the third with a homerun into the right field bleachers. The Cubs scored later in the ballgame, making it 69 consecutive games the Cubs have scored a run, but came up short in the end. Keegan Thompson shoved again, allowing just one run in 3.2 innings pitched in the bullpen day for the Cubs. The Cubs got back in the win column Wednesday night in Atlanta, winning their first extra innings game of the season 6-3 behind a go-ahead double from Willson Contreras and a 2-run homer by Patrick Wisdom late. The Cubs started the game hot at the plate jumping ahead early 3-0 thanks to Seiya Suzuki's 2-run double, setting up another multi-inning outing for Keegan Thompson, who relieved Mark Leiter Jr. in the third inning. He finally gave up his first earned run of the season, but the Cubs bullpen was elite until the 8th inning when Mychal Givens allowed two runs with two outs. In the end it wasn't enough as the Cubs went on to win in extra innings.
