Elijah makes his first appearance (in the Bible anyway) and announces a drought and that it won't end until he says so. Then God takes him away and hides him while supernaturally providing for his needs, and eventually those of the widow and her son. But not everything is roses and the son of the woman dies. How does Elijah and the widow handle tragedy? We can learn a lot from how we handle surprise tests and trials!

1 Kings 15 & 16 go through 6 kings of Israel (all during the reign of one king in Judah - Asa) and several different dynasties, ending with the father of king Ahab - Omri. Not much is written about him, but of the 6 he may be the most interesting.

In the life of king Asa, we see a man who did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He was a very good king who didn't finish as strong as he began. He won a great battle when he was outnumbered greatly, because he relied on the Lord. Decades later he won another battle, but even though every thing worked out well, God was not pleased. Just because things work out doesn't mean God is pleased when His eyes were set on a better outcome.

In the book of 1 Kings, it only gives us a little information into the reign of Abijah (or Abijam) but nothing that would show us he was a bad king. So, we go to Chronicles to get the bigger picture and see a man who had a lot of zeal to do things for God, but lacked something that God was looking for.

Both the king of the northern tribes (Israel) and the king of the southern tribes (Judah) both fell into the temptation of idolatry. So in the New Testament when Paul teaches us that God " will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able..." (1 Corinthians 10:13) mean that He will block temptations from coming to you that are too great for you to bear? If so, why would these temptations gone unblocked when a whole nation fell into idolatry as a result? If this is not what is meant, what is God not allowing?

A new king in to follow Solomon, Rehoboam takes the throne and goes to a northern city (not Jerusalem) to be put in the position of King of Israel. Find out why he goes to Shechem instead of the people coming to Jerusalem, and why things don't go so well in Shechem.

The wisest man in the world was corrupted by the world through his multiple wives and his heart turns from God. A lesson to us all to always be on guard against the corruption around us!

The fame of Solomon's wisdom spreads and people come from all over to hear him, including this visit from the queen of Sheba.

God appears a second time to Solomon (20 years later) and has some interesting things to say to him, though they might not jump out at you at first.

Our Good Friday Service

The Bible gives us a very good look at the splendor of Solomon's temple. Why is it important for us to know all this? How expensive was the temple to finish?

Solomon builds the Temple of Jerusalem. God gave the design of the alter, the ark of the covenant, the pattern of the tabernacle, it's furnishings, and so much more to Moses, told Noah how to build the ark for the animals, but he never gave a layout for a temple. So where did Solomon come up with one? The answer may tell you why God speaks of rebuilding the tabernacle of David (Amos 9:11 & Acts 15:16) but not the temple of Solomon.

Once you believe God and receive something, you have to be able to sustain it.

After Solomon receives the wisdom from God he asked for, it is immediately tested. This test was actually in the making for some time, but it gets to Solomon right after he makes the request from God. When you receive something from God (wisdom, revelation, healing, blessing, etc.) it will be tested. The enemy doesn't want you to keep it!

Not everyone is happy with the new king (Solomon) and plans are made to remove him. But God gives him wisdom to see this and stop it in it's tracks. Just because plans are made against you, doesn't mean they will succeed!

David is Dying and the thrown needs to be passed to one of his sons before it is taken by one of them.
