Romans 5:1-5 // Nikki DiekerGod’s love has been poured out into our hearts. I have often found that it’s when I am suffering that I feel the love of God the most. Like palpably feel it. It’s because, in suffering, everything is stripped away, all the things I look to tell me that I am okay apart from God, are found lacking…and I have to cling to God, nothing else works. But what does that matter to God?It matters to God because God wants a relationship with you. This is the story of the Bible from beginning to end.God created our world -- and humans -- as an overflow of His love. God is love, and He chose to create a place to put some of that love. But we rebelled against Him. Yet at His core is a desire for intimacy. God wants to be with you because God wants to be with you. God loves you because He loves you. Romans 3:1-20 // Jonathan NeefPaul has been writing to the church in Rome where Jews and Greeks are fighting over who is right. Both of them think they are okay but Paul spends the first two chapters saying here is the worst case scenario you have brought up. And not only is that scenario true but It's actually worse than you think. He needs to continue to humble them and move them through grief so that they can see what they have not seen. So that they can see their desperate and dependent state. Romans 2:17-29 // Jonathan NeefOn November 21st, 1995, the DC Talk “Jesus Freak” album made this quote saying, “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge God with their lips but deny Him with their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” Reports from Barna's research earlier this year confirm that almost thirty years later not much has changed. People still find the number one obstacle to Christianity to be hypocritical Christians. Today’s sermon we will discuss how those who identify as followers of Christ are in desperate need of rescue from hypocrisy. Our desires are so strong it can be blinding but when we finally get it, it can lead to death. Romans 1:18-23 // Nathan MillerThe gospel is God’s power to save us. What Jesus did for us. Not only are we rescued from God’s wrath. Which is amazing enough. When Jesus died, He suffered all the wrath I deserve. He took all that upon Himself. So that anyone who is with Jesus, is forever protected from the wrath of God. But we are not just rescued from His wrath. We are also rescued from the things that cause His wrath. We don’t have to live like that anymore! We don’t have to run from God. We don’t have to invent the good life on our own. Romans 1:8-15 // Brooks NessePerhaps we come in feeling like we’ve squandered opportunity after opportunity, you come from brokenness, people have told you are not worthy enough to be received by anyone. But praise God it’s not about our worth, it’s about his. And that’s where the gospel breaks in, it has the power to break division between races, social status, and occupation. It even leads to Christ Community letting a Bengals fan preach on Sunday. If that’s not proof of the power of the gospel, I don’t know what is. Why would Paul want to preach the gospel to a group of Christians? Because they need it now as much as they did when they first believed and so do we. Romans 1:1-7 // Jonathan NeefEveryone knows that feeling of desperation. Maybe it was when you went out past where you could touch in the pool before you could swim well. Maybe it was when the doctor called about the results of a routine test. Maybe it was when your job was eliminated due to a merger. Those moments of feeling the need for rescue. These become mile markers in our lives. Moments that shape us and how we understand and tell our stories. This morning as a church family we are beginning a new message series through the New Testament book of Romans. In this inspired letter we encounter the good news of an unfolding rescue story for all humanity including you and me. 2 Samuel 24 // Jonathan NeefHow would you write the ending of your story? Surely you would want to be seen in the best light possible right? Well, the ending of Samuel shows David as the chief of sinners. But while His sin is great, God’s Mercy is Greater. Today we see the story of sin, wrath, repentance, and mercy.  2 Samuel 14-18 // Brooks NesseAt this stage of II Samuel, we reach what seems to be a total spiritual eclipse, where darkness seems to be so prevalent that you struggle to see a world where the God of light is working. But it's here in the darkness that we see God break-in in the most unexpected ways with the most unexpected people. But I will warn you, with all that being said, today’s story doesn’t have a happy ending either but I want to show you glimpses of God’s plan still pressing on despite humanity doing all it can to thwart it. But God’s promises are more enduring than the sins of his people. 2 Samuel 12:1-25 // Nathan MillerSin exposed can lead to grace. When we get caught. Or when we have the courage to confess. It’s a wake-up call. It’s a fire alarm going off in the middle of the night, warning you that if you want to live, you’ve got to leave the building. It’s a light shining in the darkness. You didn’t even know you were walking along the edge of the cliff, headed for disaster. But now you can see the better way.For David repents. Which means he recognizes his sin (finally), owns it (without excuses), accepts the consequences for it, and turns away from it as quickly as possible. That’s grace. Will you turn before you become the villain?Hiding always leads to more shame. Duplicity never leads to happiness. Self-justification only brings about deeper inadequacy.King David is a colossal disappointment. But he was never meant to be the ultimate hero we need. Yet, what’s so amazing to me, is that our God is so big, so forgiving, so loving, that He actually uses even this to bring about our rescue.And where Adam and Eve failed. And where David failed. 2 Samuel 9:1-13 // Jonathan NeefWe are in the place of Mephibosheth. We are orphaned from our heavenly father, we are crippled and broken by sin, we are poor and needy. Yet God in his Love searches for us and seeks us out. He calls us to himself and lavishes his steadfast and enduring love toward us. He offers us a seat at the table, riches, an inheritance, a place in His kingdom. Why would God be so generous towards us? Because of His covenant and loyal love toward His Son. Just as David demonstrated steadfast love toward Mephibosheth because of His love for Jonathan.
